MD Historical Trust Preservation Award For Armory Marketplace

The Maryland Historical Trust held its annual Preservation Awards ceremony on January 31, 2019 where the Town of Bel Air was selected as the recipient for its Armory Marketplace project in the Project Excellence: Community Impact category. The Bel Air Board of Town Commissioners will recognize Frederick Ward Associates, Imark Builders, Inc. and other project team members for the award at the Town Board meeting to be held on February 19, 2019.

The Maryland Historical Trust is a state agency dedicated to preserving and interpreting the legacy of Maryland’s past. Presented annually by the Maryland Historical Trust Board of Trustees, the Maryland Preservation Awards represent the highest level of recognition that projects can receive for historic preservation, heritage education and community development. The Project Excellence Awards are presented to projects within the State of Maryland for restoration or rehabilitation where the design, materials, and workmanship demonstrate excellent historic preservation standards. The Town of Bel Air was nominated for the award by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.

The completion of construction for Armory Marketplace marks the culmination of transforming the historic Armory Complex from a National Guard facility to a vibrant community center. The project has converted the garages located behind the Armory from a long term, vacant building to a business incubator with four suites for new and emerging businesses. The fifth suite houses Harford Artists’ Association, a non-profit art gallery which serves as a permanent tenant anchoring the north end of the Bel Air Arts and Entertainment District.

Several goals of the Armory Marketplace are job creation, enhancement of a historic property and the creation of incubator spaces to help start-up businesses.
